Spectral Paints FAQ's
1. How do I find the right color match for my vehicle?
Check your vehicle’s paint code sticker. It’s usually located in your door jamb, under the hood, in the glovebox, or in the trunk. A quick online search will help you find it or you can send us a message!
-
2. How much paint do I need?
One can of basecoat / one set of groundcoat + midcoat cover about 4-5 square feet. We typically recommend two cans of paint for any full bumper, fender, or door. A larger area like a roof or hood will take three or more. Order our kits with primer and clear to ensure you have everything you need.
-
3. Do I need to use primer or clear coat with your touch-up spray paint?
If you are painting raw metal, you should use primer. If you are painting plastic, you should use our plastic adhesion promoter before priming. If you are painting a prepped previously painted surface, you can go directly to paint. All of our paints need to be clear coated.
-
4. How do I properly prep the surface before applying touch-up paint?
See our customer instructions for prep instructions.
-
5. Can your spray paint be used on plastic, metal, or fiberglass parts?
Please scuff with a fine grey scuff pad and use our plastic adhesion promoter before priming/painting plastic parts. Primer is not required over plastic adhesion promoter, but highly recommended for a better finish.
-
6. How long does the paint take to dry and fully cure?
Apply primer in medium layers with 5-10 minutes between layers. Let the primer cure for at least 30 minutes before wet sanding. After wet sanding, clean the area and let it dry for at least 1 hour. While painting, wait 5-10 minutes between layers and let the paint cure for at least 30 minutes before clear coat. The paint does not need to be sanded. You can then proceed to clear coat, detailed below.
-
7. Can I polish or wax over the painted area after application?
Our clear needs 24 hours of dry time before you can handle the part. Wait 24-48hr before wet sanding. After 30 days of cure time, the part can be sealed/waxed.
-
8. Is your paint an OEM match? What if my color is off?
99% of the time, yes. All of our orders come with a test card. Please spray 2-3 light/medium layers of paint followed by 2-3 light layers of clear coat to check the match. Send us a message if anything is off.
-
9. Do you offer bulk or wholesale pricing for body shops or dealerships?
Send us a message or give us a call at 708-365-9966 to inquire about bulk orders or body shop partnerships.
-
10. Do I need any special equipment to use your product?
Outside of our paint, you will need prep materials like sandpaper, tape and paper, alcohol or a solvent cleaner, and time. We always recommend using a ventilator as well.
-
11. Is your spray paint safe to use indoors or in enclosed spaces?
We always recommend spraying in a well ventilated area or outside on a calm, clear day. Avoid spraying in the sun or while the car is too warm or cold. We always recommend using a ventilator when painting your vehicle.
-
12. What temperature or weather conditions are best for applying the paint?
Try to spray the car between 65F-80F and lower than 70% humidity. Ensure the surface is clean and at room temperature. Spraying too hot or too cold can lead to cracking.
